Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our professional tattoo training course. Can't find your answer? Contact us.

How long does the course take?

The course is designed as a ~12 week program with 25 modules. However, it's entirely self-paced — you can move faster or slower depending on your schedule. Some students complete it in 8 weeks; others take 4-6 months. There are no deadlines, and you have lifetime access. See the full curriculum breakdown to plan your schedule.

Do I need any prior experience?

No prior tattoo experience is required. The course starts from the fundamentals and builds progressively. Basic drawing skills are helpful but not required — we cover drawing fundamentals for tattooing in Module 3. If you're a complete beginner, you'll be well-prepared by following the curriculum in order. Read our guide on how to become a tattoo artist for the full roadmap.

Is this course accredited?

This is a professional training course, not an accredited academic program. Tattoo training is not regulated through traditional academic accreditation in most states. However, our curriculum covers all the knowledge areas required by state licensing boards, including bloodborne pathogen training, safety protocols, and legal compliance. Licensing requirements vary by state — Module 19 covers what you need to know for your area.

What supplies do I need?

To practice the techniques taught in the course, you'll need basic tattoo supplies: a tattoo machine (rotary pen-style recommended for beginners, ~$150-300), practice skin pads (~$20-40), tattoo ink, needles/cartridges, gloves, and stencil supplies. We provide a detailed supply list with recommended products and budget options in Module 1 of our curriculum. Expect to invest $300-600 in starter supplies.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. We offer a 14-day money-back guarantee from the date of purchase. If you're not satisfied with the course within the first 14 days, contact usfor a full refund — no questions asked. We're confident in the quality of our training, and we want you to be too.

Do I get a certificate?

Yes — upon completing all 25 modules and passing the associated quizzes, you'll receive a Certificate of Completion from TattooTraining101. Note that this is a training completion certificate, not a state tattoo license. State licensing requirements vary and may require additional steps such as bloodborne pathogen certification, apprenticeship hours, or health department inspections.

Is this a replacement for an apprenticeship?

This course provides the comprehensive theoretical knowledge, safety training, and business education that many apprenticeships lack. However, it's not a direct replacement for hands-on mentorship. We recommend combining our course with practice on synthetic skin and, when possible, seeking mentorship from an experienced artist for feedback on your technique. Many of our students find that completing the course makes them much stronger apprenticeship candidates. Check our pricing page to see how our course compares to traditional apprenticeship costs.
